Hello rooftop community!
After spending a wonderful summer gardening on the rooftops of Montreal, I’m back to my everyday ground-level life in Victoria, BC. The summer I spent working with the Rooftop Gardens Project was one of the most fun and inspiring I’ve ever spent, and I was so happy to share it with all of you. I must say I miss Montreal, but it seems that the magic of the rooftop garden project continues to follow me all the way across the country!
Since coming back I’ve met three former Santropol Roulant volunteers, all of whom said that the Santropol saved their lives in Montreal when they were all newly arrived Anglophones. But then an even stranger connection appeared. I was registering for a youth conference on sustainability, when I recognized the last name of the organizer – Geselbracht. “Didn’t someone named Geselbracht buy a Ready to Grow self-watering container this summer?” I thought to myself. So I asked, and sure enough, it was the brother of the same Daniel Geselbracht who had bought the grower.
Not only had Daniel bought a Ready to Grow kit, but when he moved back to Victoria he built his own self-watering container to replace the one he’d left in Montreal. Now Daniel and I are both continuing our interest in food security and urban agriculture by working together with the Food University Network (FUN) of the University of Victoria Sustainability Project. We work on promoting local food security on campus and in Victoria through fun and interactive events. Among other things, we’re discussing plans to spread the joy of building your own self-watering container to other gardening-obsessed west coasters with a workshop in the spring. The Rooftop Garden Project takes Victoria!
