Des jardins sur les toits est un projet d' Alternatives, un réseau d'action et de communication pour le développement international.
As a renter of a third floor apartment in Little Italy with only a humble balcony, I decided to expand my territory by creating a garden at ground level. With the involvement of the first floor tenants, I installed five self-watering gardening containers connected in a network to a 200 liter barrel of water. The barrel is connected to a container with a floater like in a toilet to maintain the desired level of water in the rest of the garden containers. Five wooden planters help to complete the decoration. Lettuce, strawberries, nasturtium, tomatoes, basil, ground cherries, cucumbers and some annual flowers make up the garden. Some cannas will give the whole garden a tropical flourish and the herbs spice up the colorful mixture. The plants are for everyone and the first floor tenants take care of the watering. A true community has been created around the garden, much to the enjoyment of all passers-by.

Entre Maman, a community center located in Mercier-Hochelaga Maisonneuve focused on developing positive and stimulating projects for new and expecting parents, a space where they can create relationships with other parents and enrich their relationship with their own children.

Unfortunately, our friends in LA have lost another round in the fight to save their fourteen acre farm. They will continue with an appeal, but as time goes on the farm becomes more and more likely to be lost to developers forever.
Just last week here in Montreal, City officials released a report that stated that the Baldwin Park community garden was contaminated with Lead, Zinc, Arsenic and Cadmium. While no specifics were given, the city is claiming that the garden may have to be closed down due to these heavy metals.

After the World Urban Forum in June, I spent a few days on Vancouver island visiting my mother, an avid lifetime gardener who recently moved into a new apartment and for the first time does not have her own backyard.
She has always been an inspiration for my urban gardening projects. It was her who started me tending to a few carnations as a small boy, and I still remember the wonder I felt watching the tiny seeds sprout, then blossom into colourful flowers. Later, as a teenager, she put me to work tilling a significant portion of our yard to grow all kinds of vegetables (which I was even starting to enjoy eating!)

My family just forwarded me this encouraging article about guerilla gardening in Vancouver. One of my mom's friends just got permission from the Municipality of Saanich in Victoria to plant vegetables in the boulevard outside her house too.

I have attached an article below about a 14 acre community farm in South Central LA that is being demolished to make way for a warehouse. A friend of the RGP is working with the group to help them in their fight against the developers.

This morning I represented the project at a meeting with the CRE (Conseil
regional de l'environnement de Montreal) about the urban heat island effect.
Here are my notes and what I took away from it:
Basically, the CRE has received funding for a two-year project dealing with
making the Montreal community (mostly the Plateau area) aware of the urban heat
island effect (les ilots de chaleur).
They will be doing this in several ways:
1) Technical side: Planting hundreds of trees in school yards, in alleyways, and
in public/private areas. They are cooperating with local eco-quartiers for this
